Why look for a waterproof ereader?
Before reviewing each of the ereaders in our best waterproof e-reader 2020 table, we need to first briefly discuss why anybody would need waterproofing in any e-ink devices at all. Wouldn’t it be best to simply take your reading indoors where you are safe from the elements? Why bother looking for the best waterproof ereader 2020?
It’s not all a marketing gimmick
The first thing to note is that waterproofing is not simply a marketing gimmick. At least not where e-ink readers are concerned. If you have ever owned an ereader, you will understand the fact that the device is an amazing tool as far as reading your favorite books is concerned.
Most people compare reading on an e reader with reading on a tablet. The result are vastly in favor of e-ink devices. Once you have bought one, you can read your books indoors and outside; even in direct sunlight.
It enhances the process of relaxing
Adding waterproofing means you don’t have to worry about your e-reader getting wet while you are reading outside. Let’s face it, reading is all about relaxation and outdoors is where it happens best.
If you are anything like me, you enjoy taking a chair outdoors and going through your favorite books while basking in the sun. Not that anybody is going to want to “bask,” in the rain, but that’s something that you will be able to do using an e reader that has waterproofing.
You can read by the poolside or even in the pool
You can also read your favorite books by the waterfront. Again, we need to repeat that it’s not all a marketing gimmick. Reading and relaxation are synonymous, or they should be. Not having to worry about water splashing onto your reader while in the pool is a good way of furthering that relaxation.
Waterproof e-readers are kid friendly
We have previously written an article in which we highlight some of the best e-readers for kids that are on the market today. Waterproofing is part of the process of making an e-ink reader child friendly. That’s particularly the case for very young children. It removes any worry that you may have that an ereader is going to be damaged through less than careful handling.
Best waterproof e-ink readers 2020
Having said that, it’s now time for us to take a look at some of the best waterproof e-ink readers that can be found on the market today. Most of the models that feature in this article have already been reviewed on this blog. So, we are going to be somewhat brief in our analysis. Hopefully, that will be enough to help you make an informed choice.
Kindle Paperwhite 10th Generation 2018
The all new Kindle Paperwhite is the first on our list of the best waterproof ereaders for 2020. Kindle is, without doubt, one of the best known names in e-ink readers. It’s also a good bet for the best waterproof ereader for 2020. Made by Amazon, the device is specifically designed to take advantage of the amazing Kindle books ecosystem. Yes, you can read books on the devices that are not made in the Kindle store, but you have access to millions of books right there through your Kindle.
Waterproofing on Kindles used to be restricted to the Oasis, which is the high end model bearing the brand. However, now waterproofing has been extended to the Paperwhite, which is great. Anyway, the following are some of the features that you can expect to find on the Paperwhite;
- And e-ink screen that is glare free
- A 300ppi screen
- A display that’s flush with the bezel
- 8 or 32 GB storage
- Long battery life of up to 6 weeks
- Adjustable backlighting
- Access to millions of books
- Free cloud storage
- Support for multiple formats
How good is the waterproofing on the Kindle Paperwhite?
The Kindle Paperwhite waterproof ereader is can withstand being exposed to moisture, but how good is it? That’s the question that most people ask when they hear about this feature. To some, being waterproof means being able to withstand a few moments in the rain or in a pool. However, for the most adventurous among us, being waterproof means being able to withstand a few hours in the sea. So, where does the Paperwhite stand in terms of waterproofing.
The Kindle Paperwhite is IPX8 waterproof
A device’s IPX rating reflex its ability to withstand moisture. You will see IPX ratings on most devices that have waterproofing. The higher the rating, the better. So, an IPX8 rated device will be expected to perform better in terms of waterproofing than an IPX7 rated device. The IPX8 rating on the Kindle Paperwhite makes it one of the best waterproof ereaders on the market today. But what does it all mean in terms of performance.
You can dip your Kindle Paperwhite in up to 2 meters of water
Good news for those that like to dip by the pool; the latest model Kindle Paperwhite can be “accidentally,” dropped in up to 2 meters of water for up to 60 minutes without suffering damage. That should give you absolute peace of mind as you read by the pool.
We do need to reiterate that waterproofing is only available on the latest model Kindle Paperwhite. If you have a previous model device, you should not try this at home. If you do, don’t blame us. Just to make it clear, the Paperwhite that’s waterproof is the one whose screen is flush with the bezel.
On the previous model, the bezel was raised above the screen. That one is not waterproof, so, don’t go about trying to read your books out in the rain. If you do, you will be in for a terrible loss.
What type of water are we talking about here?
Here is another thing that we need to clarify here; water comes in a variety of types. There is fresh water, then there is sea water. There is even “acid,” water and soda water. There is also Coke or Pepsi water, and so forth.
The Kindle Paperwhite 10th edition has undergone a lot of waterproofing testing but that was on “normal,” fresh water. If you try reading your books under the sea in salty sea water, you will probably damage the device. The same applies for acid water. Trying reading in that and it will probably get damaged soon. Never mind damage to your body parts.
Other than the waterproofing, the Kindle Paperwhite 10th Generation 2018 is clearly an amazing e-reader. This is a device that has been well received on the market. If you are a first time e-ink reader buyer, then this device will probably blow your mind. The following are the Paperwhite’s other notable features;
- A 300ppi e-ink display: Text on the Paperwhite is crisp and is even better than on real books. There, we have said it. The Paperwhite gets you a better reading experience than on real books. The screen is glare free, meaning you can enjoy your books in direct sunlight. To put it bluntly, there is no comparison in terms of reading experience.
- Supports multiple formats: The Kindle Paperwhite supports lot’s for formats, including MOBI, PDF, TXT, DOC, DOCX, GIF, JPEG and many more. Rendering of PDF files is not the best however, and you shouldn’t buy the Paperwhite if that’s what you have in mind. You will be better off buying bigger screen devices.
- Long battery life: The battery on the Kindle Paperwhite will last you up to 6 weeks on an average of 30 minutes a day reading. Of course, there is something wrong with how e-reader manufacturers determine battery life. Once you get into a book, you don’t read it for only 30 minutes. You read it till you are done with it. Anyway, you will be happy to know that you can go through several novels without needing to recharge your Kindle Paperwhite.
- You get double the storage: The new Kindle Paperwhite gives you double the storage compared to previous versions. However, we do have to note that storage is not such a big deal on e-readers. Unless you wish to store books for an entire University, you probably won’t need more than 2 GB of storage on yours. So 32 GB is something of an overkill in our view.
The Kindle Paperwhite 10th Generation, also referred to as the Kindle Paperwhite 4, is clearly great option if you are looking for the best waterproof ereader for 2020. With this device, you don’t have to worry about getting caught out in the rain or accidentally dropping the device into the tub while bathing. The Paperwhite is clearly a great device, which is why it has received so many rave reviews from people who have already bought it.
Kobo Libra H20
Not a Kindle fan? Well, the good news is that there are still other good waterproof ereaders out there for people who do not wish to be tied to the Kindle ecosystem. One of these is the Kobo Libra H20. For those not in the know, Kobo makes some great e-readers. It has its own ecosystem and is one of the biggest competitors for Amazon’s Kindle range. So, what can you expect when you buy the Kobo Libra H2O?
- E-ink screen for comfortable reading
- 7 inches
- WiFi connectivity
- Buttons for turning pages
- 8 GB storage
How good is waterproofing on the Kobo Libra H2O
The Kobo Libra H20 is a great device as far as e-ink readers are concerned? But how good is it in terms of waterproofing? That, after all, is the major feature that we are looking at here. One of the things that you will notice is that the Kobo Libra H2O is very much similar to the Kindle Paperwhite 10th edition when it comes to waterproof. In that regard, it’s one of the best waterproof ereaders that you will be able to find out there.
IPX8 Waterproofing Rating
Like the Kindle Paperwhite, the Kobo Libra H2O comes with an IPX8 waterproof rating. This is something that we have already looked at in terms of the Paperwhite. An IPX rating denotes the level of exposure to moisture that a device can withstand without suffering damage. A higher rating means a device has better waterproofing.
How long can the Kobo Libra H2O be dipped in water?
If you wish to use the Kobo Libra H2O by the poolside, the good news is that the device can be dipped in up to 2 meters of water for 2 hours without suffering damage. So, if for some reason, you would like to read books underwater, this is something that you can safely do using the Kobo Libra.
It has to be fresh water
Testing on the Kobo Libra H2O was done in fresh water, so you shouldn’t dip the device in acid. Neither should you expose it to too much salt water. The Kobo Libra H2O should also be able to withstand other accidental liquid spills around the home.
The Kobo Libra H2O is a great device in terms of waterproofing. But how does it perform when it comes to other features? How does it stake when compared to e-readers from Kindle and other manufacturers;
- The Kobo Libra H2O uses E ink Carta technology, same as the Kindles. The e-ink screen is really amazing. That’s particularly the case if you have never owned an ereader before. In terms of reading books, there is really no comparison. We get asked sometimes whether or not it would be better to buy a tablet. After all, you can do a lot more on that, such as surfing the net and watching videos. However, there is no comparison with ereaders for a purely impressive reading experience.
- 8 GB storage: Storage on the Kobo Libra H2O stands at 8 GB. That’s more than enough for the average person. In fact, anyone will be hard pressed to use up over 2GB of storage on their ereader. Books do not take that much space.
- The physical buttons are a feature that you could easily get used to. The Kindle Paperwhite that we looked at does not have them. Yes, they are on the Kindle Oasis, but that’s a much more pricier option than the Kobo Libra H2O. So, if waterproofing and physical page-turn-buttons are features that you are looking for, then you should opt for the Kobo Libra H2O.
- Backlighting: Backlighting is something that’s really convenient in ereaders. It means you will be able to read your books anywhere, including in the dark. Most e-ink readers coming onto the market today come with backlighting, even the entry level offerings.
- The screen on the Kobo Libra H2O comes in at 300ppi. That’s the same as on the Kindle Paperwhite and the Kindle Oasis. To be frank, we have had some people who have migrated from lower ppi screens state that they cant really tell the difference. These are black and white screen devices after all. Nevertheless, the screen on the Kobo Libra H2O is on the same level as any of the other best ereaders with waterproofing that are on the market today.
What have people been saying about the Kobo Libra H2O?
It would be a travesty to close this section without taking a look at what people have been saying about the Kobo Libra H2O waterproof ereader. After all, thousands of people have already bought the device. What do they say about their purchase?
The Kobo Libra H2O has a good rating
One of the things that you will note is that the Kobo Libra H2O has a very good rating. Check online and you will see that most people who have bought the device have expressed satisfaction. It doesn’t have a 5 out of 5 rating, but not device can ever have that. But the Kobo Libra H2O has a better rating than even the Kindle Oasis, for which it is a direct competitor.
If you are looking for the best waterproof ereader that also has physical page turn buttons, then you wont go wrong with the Kobo Libra H2O. We have already noted that this device is a direct competitor for the Kindle Oasis. The really cool thing about the Libra H2O when compared to the Oasis is that the Libera is way cheaper. The Kindle Oasis tends to be the most expensive product in the Kindle Range. The Kobo Libra H2O is, therefore, a very good alternative.
The All New Kindle Oasis
We have already mentioned the All-new Kindle Oasis several times in this article, particularly in relation to the Kobo Libra H2O. The Oasis is the premium Kindle ereader from Amazon. This is actually reflected in it’s price. The All-new Kindle Oasis is more expensive than the Kindle Paperwhite and the Kindle. In terms of waterproofing, the Oasis is another great offering for those looking for the best waterproof e ink reader for 2020. The following are the All-new Kindle Oasis’s features;
- 300 ppi screen
- Page turn buttons
- Adjustable warn light
- IPX8 waterproofing
- An e-ink display makes reading a charm
- Access to millions of books
How good is the waterproofing on the Kindle Oasis?
This article is concerned with finding the best waterproof ebook reader for 2020. So, how does the All-new Kindle Oasis perform in this regard? How does it compare with the Kindle Paperwhite and the Kobo Libra H2O? In terms of performance, the Kindle Oasis is one of the best waterproof ereaders for the following reasons;
To those that have always dreamed of reading books in the bath, by the pool or outside in the rain, then the All-new Kindle Oasis will do the trick for you. Of course, most people try to avoid all these scenarios, but who are we to judge. Fact is; the Kindle Oasis is one of the best ereaders with waterproofing that are on the market today.
The device comes with IPX8 wateproofing. That’s similar to what we saw on both the Kindle Paperwhite and on the Kobo Libra H2O. So, IPX8 appears to be something of a standard for ereaders. In reality, there is no way for anybody to determine whether one of these devices is better at being dipped in water than others.
What does it all mean?
But what does it mean to be IPX8 waterproof rated? Well, this is something that we have already noted in other devices. The rating means you can dip the Kindle Oasis in up to 2 meters of water for 2 hours. So, if you have always wanted to read your books while at the bottom of a pool, now is your chance. That’s another thing making the Kindle Oasis one of the the best waterproof ereader for 2020.
It can take being dropped in a hot tub
Generally speaking, you should test your ereader, whether it’s a Kobo or Kindle, in a situation in which you yourself would be unsafe. That’s one way of ensuring that you don’t damage your device while trying out the waterproofing.
If you drop your Kindle Oasis into acid, as an example, it’s probably going to be damaged beyond repair. However, you can safely drop it into hot water while bathing. You could even drop it into the ocean and it will be fine as long as you clean it with fresh water afterwards.
The Kindle Oasis is a notable device. Being one of the best waterproof ereaders is only one thing for which this gadget is known. So, what else is the All-new Kindle Oasis good at? What other features have made this one of the most sought after e-ink readers of all time?
Page turn buttons
Among newer e-readers bearing the Kindle brand, this is the only one that comes with physical turn buttons. So, if this is what you are looking for, the Kindle Oasis is your best bet. We have already talked about physical turn buttons while reviewing the Kobo Libra H20. We noted then that the buttons offer one handed reading convenience.
And they make the device useful for both left and right handed people. Hold the All-new Kindle Oasis with the buttons to the left, and the screen will flip to an appropriate setting. This is actually very useful when it comes to reading while taking down notes.
One unique thing about the All-new Kindle Oasis is that it comes with adaptive lighting. That’s useful for those that wish to read in the dark. Most e readers on the market today have some form of backlighting. The great thing about the Kindle Oasis is that the lighting can be set to kick in at certain times. You can also choose to have lighting on your device adapts to the ambient lighting wherever you may be.
One thing that’s worth noting with regarding to backlighting on the Kindle Oasis is that the device actually has 25 LED lights build into the screen. That’s a lot and ensures an even distribution of light when the device is being used in the dark. By comparison, the Kindle has 2 LEDs, while the Kindle Paperwhite has 5. So, you can be sure that the Oasis is a better device in the Kindle family.
Another notable thing about the Oasis is that it comes with adaptable warm light. This turns the screen slightly amber, which is great under certain reading conditions. When reading in direct sunlight, as an example, warm light makes the screen friendlier to the eye.
You get Audible
If you would rather listen to books, then the Kindle Oasis is a good bet for you. Like the Kindle Paperwhite, the Oasis comes with Audible, which allows you to connect to audio devices via Bluetooth. So, you can connect your Bluetooth headphones or your Bluetooth speakers to the Oasis, which allows you to listen to audio books.
Please note that the All-new Kindle Oasis does not actually have a build in speaker. The same applies for the Kindle Paperwhite. You only get to listen to audio books by connecting the gadget to Bluetooth speakers or headphones, as already noted.
32 GB storage
The All-new Kindle Oasis come in with 32 GB storage. That’s a bit of an overkill, but comes in handy if you listen to audio books. For normal books, 32 GB is enough to store books that can give you several years of reading. So, you may not need that much.
As already noted, the Kindle Oasis is one of the best waterproof e readers that you will be able to find on the market this year. So, you shouldn’t hesitate to buy it if this feature is important to you. We have already noted that the Oasis has a direct competitor in the form of the Kobo Libra H2O.
So, you may wish to check that out before buying the Oasis. The Libra H2O is way cheaper than the Oasis, though specs appear to be the same.
Think about the ecosystem before buying
One thing to note however is that when buying an ereader, you are not just buying a brand. You are buying an entire ecosystem. It’s something to consider when choosing the best Waterproof ereader for 2020.
Each manufacturer, from Amazon to Kobo and Nook, has their own ecosystem to support their devices. Some of the books that are there are exclusive. As an example, books that sign up for KDP Select cannot be listed on any other store.
So, this is something that you are going to need to think about. It’s not all about the hardware. It’s also about what you will be able to get using that hardware. In reality, you could always buy books from anwhere and convert them.
We do that a lot on our Kindle Paperwhite. It’s a simple matter of getting books from one place or the other on the internet and then converting them to the MOBI format. We are not talking about piracy here. There are many places where you can buy books that are in the EPUB format. Once you have them, you can convert them to whatever format you are interested in.
Anyway, these are all thoughts that you need to have when it comes to choosing the best waterproof ereader for 2020. In this article, we showed you the Kindle Paperwhite, the Kobo Libra H2O and the Kindle Oasis. These are some of the best ereaders with waterproofing that are on the market today.
You will have noticed that all these devices come with IPX8 waterproof rating. So, there is really nothing separating them on this important feature. That is the reason why we ended up looking at the other features.
